Speaker A:That's an old joke, but underneath it all is a real feeling.
Speaker A:The future isn't what most of us expected.
Speaker A:Technology was supposed to free us, not just capture our attention and squeeze every dollar out of us.
Speaker A:Institutions were supposed to work instead of balkanizing society and slicing and dicing us into little groups fearful of everybody else and everything.
Speaker A:Instead, we got wealth, concentration, attention, economies, and declining trust in just about everything and everyone else.
Speaker A:Now, I don't think anyone lied to us exactly.
Speaker A:I think their promises were sincere.
Speaker A:I think they just didn't think about society changing its perspective and priorities.
