Why State-Mandated Media Literacy Might Backfire
Media literacy is now a required subject in K-12 schools in California, and New York State is set to follow suit. Honestly, I can’t think of a worse idea. While I fully support the need for media literacy, state-mandated courses feel like a recipe for disaster. We dive into why these concepts should be left to parents or other caring adults to teach, rather than imposed by political agendas. With public schools already struggling to teach the basics like reading, writing, and arithmetic, we should focus on getting those right before piling on more.

Speaker A:New York State is following their lead soon, and I can't think of a worse idea.
Speaker A:As a journalist and career communications professional, I'm all for media literacy, but state mandated media literacy is a different story.
Speaker A:That idea is ripe for abuse.
Speaker A:These concepts should be in the hands of parents or caring adults or yourself as you grow up and learn through trial and error, not dictates from politicians with their own agendas, no matter what party they come from.
Speaker A:It's bad enough that our public schools are struggling teaching reading, writing and arithmetic.
Speaker A:How about we get the basics right before we add more to those plates?
